Max Wober surprises with what he unexpectedly did in front of annoyed Leeds fans

Aidy White has admitted that he did not expect Max Wober to be as good at attacking as he was as Leeds United beat Derby County 2-0 on Saturday.

Wober started the game at Elland Road on 7 December as a substitute, but an early injury to Junior Firpo saw him step in at left-back before scoring the Whites’ second towards the end of the first half.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds’ Football Forum, White said that the Austria international was not tested defensively due to the manner of the win, but feels the door is now open for him to get the fans annoyed at him for leaving on loan last season back on his side.

“He was solid. He didn’t really get tested going the other way, which remains to be seen in his 1v1 defensive capabilities in the wide areas”, the former Whites left-back said.

“But going forward, he was good, and that was the thing that I probably didn’t expect and maybe most fans didn’t expect from him.

“He got himself so high that he ended up on the scoresheet and his passing was good, also his intensity. I think that goal gave him a load of confidence.

“Understandably, a lot of fans, I can imagine, are frustrated and have been annoyed at him in the past with his decisions.

“But, it’s similar to Brenden Aaronson early in the season, maybe it’ll give him that initial boost he needs just to get him underway.”

At least some fans would have been surprised to see Daniel Farke bring Wober on for Firpo despite having Isaac Schmidt, a left-back by trade, on the bench.

The 26-year-old, nevertheless, repaid the German tactician’s faith by excelling out of position and helping the Elland Road outfit claim all three points.

Like White, Stuart Dallas was also impressed with the former Red Bull Salzburg star’s performance, tipping his hat to him for making the most of the opportunity.

With Firpo ruled out for Leeds’ home game against Middlesbrough on Tuesday [10 December], Wober could be in line to start at left-back.

However, there are serious doubts about Wober’s future in Yorkshire ahead of the January transfer window.

Salzburg are interested in re-signing the centre-back from the Whites, who, for their part, are also ready to sanction an exit [Salzburger Nachrichten].

It remains to be seen if the situation will change if Wober continues to impress for Farke’s side between now and January.
