Max Wober admits relief to be away from Leeds United as future unclear at Elland Road

Max Wober has admitted his relief at being away from Leeds United after the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

The 25-year-old only made the switch to West Yorkshire in the January transfer window, but his future is already “unclear”, with suitors likely to emerge this summer. [Leeds Live, 8 June]

The centre-back is currently on international duty for Ralf Rangnick’s Austria team, who face Belgium and Sweden in Euro 2023 qualifiers over the next week.

As reported by Kicker, he said: “Everything feels freer.

“It’s good for me that I can concentrate on other things again.

“We just didn’t manage to win the important games. Everything was tense in a way.”

Pressurised environment

Although many players let themselves down in the relegation run-in, Wober was one of the few to stand up and make himself heard.

Despite only arriving in the winter window, the Austrian quickly took up a leadership role and looked at home immediately in the relentless and fast-paced Premier League.

Due to the implications of Premier League relegation to Leeds United, the whole club would have felt rather toxic in the last few weeks of the season.

It is no surprise to see that Wober is a little relieved to have left the cauldron for international duty, but whether he will return for another season is still yet to be seen.

If the Whites can keep hold of the defender this summer, it will be a job well done. He is a cut above the Championship and should have plenty of suitors from both England and abroad over the next couple of months.

In other Leeds United news, Sky Sports have shared that new player contract talks have begun at Elland Road already.
