Matthew Upson thrilled by what Liam Cooper did in defeat v Southampton

Matthew Upson was pleased with Liam Cooper’s composure in the first half of Leeds United v Southampton.

After dominating in the first half hour, the Saints looked threatening once again, when Armando Broja seemed to have a clear shot at Illan Meslier in the Leeds goal.

However, Cooper did really well to challenge the Saints attacker and force the ball out for a corner.

Speaking on the Premier League world feed, Upson, a Sky Sports pundit said, “Fantastic tackle from Cooper. He sees the space there. The anticipation from the defender was great.”

All over the place

The Whites missed a number of key players for this game, but that’s no excuse for performing in the way they did.

In the first half especially, they seemed second best at everything and were unfortunate not to be trailing at half time.

Their chance creation in front of goal was non-existent and it felt like the entire game was being played in their half.

The hosts took full advantage of a weakened Whites side and Marcelo Bielsa did not seem to have any answers for them in the first half.

However, they got their deserved goal in the second half and there were no doubts as to who the better side was at the time.

Leeds’ bad start to the season has continued and hopefully, things change soon or they could be facing the real threat of relegation this campaign.
