Matt Le Tissier furious with referee as Leeds beat Southampton 3-0
Matt Le Tissier has blasted referee Andre Marriner for his “woeful” performance as Leeds United beat Southampton 3-0 at Elland Road on Tuesday.
Southampton were left feeling aggrieved over a couple of refereeing decisions in the first half. Marriner initially awarded the away side a penalty but after a VAR review, it was concluded that Nathan Tella was not fouled by Diego Llorente.
Marrier also ruled out a goal by Che Adams after Southampton took a quick free-kick despite the referee not signalling for play to continue.
Despite Marriner and the VAR getting the decisions correct, Southampton legend Le Tissier took to social media to vent his anger.
“Woeful standard of refereeing again. About time Mike Riley stood down and get someone in charge who can improve the standards,” said the ex-Saints striker via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night.
Matt Le Bitter
There’s no way Le Tissier can seriously complain about the two incidents that we mentioned earlier.
Referees always make it clear that free-kicks can’t be taken until they’re ready for play to commence while the Tella incident obviously wasn’t a penalty as the Saints player kicked Diego Llorente, not the other way around.
It all smacks of bitterness from Le Tissier, who’s often aired controversial views on social media in recent months.
Mike Riley, who’s currently the general manager of PGMOL, has a tough job, as do all of the referees in world football.
Some of the on-field and VAR decisions we’ve seen this season are bordering on baffling but even with the right decisions, referees are always going to face scrutiny from a vocal bunch of supporters.
It must be easier for them in quiet stadiums with no fans on their backs but as we’ve recently seen with Mike Dean, the abuse goes too far.
We’re not saying you can’t criticise referees but Le Tissier’s moaning about absolutely nothing here.
