Matheus Cunha agent rules out Leeds United move

Matheus Cunha’s agent has ruled out any chances of the Hertha Berlin attacking midfielder joining Leeds United this summer.

Sky Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed on Twitch last Thursday (July 2) that negotiations between Leeds and the Bundesliga club for the Brazilian are not going so well.

The Elland Road outfit director of football Victor Orta and Cunha’s agent held talks last month, but he does not see a deal getting struck this summer.

“Last month we spoke with Victor about the transfer, but there has been no offer – I don’t think it will happen,” he exclusively told LUFCFanzone, a well-established Instagram account that is followed by a number of Leeds players and has over 55,000 followers.

“I am not sure that for Leeds Matheus is a priority. If he’s not a priority, then I don’t want him to go. We want a club that believes in him and understands his potential. We would rather wait a year for a club to arrive who will see him as a key figure – especially after the Olympics.

“I do not know Leeds’ financial situation but the deal would not be cheap – between €30-€35million. I think very highly of Victor (Orta) and of course Bielsa, and we believe in Leeds’ project. But in two years Matheus will be a top, top player, and he wants to be a key figure in a team.”

Not happening

Romano’s update last week was not good, and the recent one from Cunha’s agent is a huge blow.

Leeds want to strengthen their squad in order to push for Europe next season, but a central midfielder is currently top of their shopping list for the summer after Spanish left-back Junior Firpo was snapped up.

We are well-stocked in attack, and while the 22-year-old would be a useful addition in terms of bolstering our squad depth, it does not look like a move is on the cards.

Hertha want around £30million for the winger, and Leeds are clearly not ready to spend that much to bring in another forward.

We do not see the sense in signing another expensive attacker too, and it is safe to say this one would not be happening this summer.

The Whites are looking to strengthen in the middle of the park instead with Kalvin Phillips in dire need of a cover, and that is where Orta is focusing on.

Nevertheless, we do not expect the Cunha links to stop anytime soon, and we will be keeping an eye on things as they develop.

In other Leeds news, Rio Ferdinand has sent two word message as Whites confirm announcement.
