Mateusz Klich opens up about anger over Leeds United exit, wants to return to Elland Road one day
Mateusz Klich has admitted he was angry with Jesse Marsch over his treatment at Leeds this season which led to his exit to DC United, in an interview with Sportowe Fakty.
The Poland international left Elland Road after five-and-a-half years at Elland Road to move to the MLS as a designated player having been used sparsely by Marsch since the start of the season, with the arrivals of Tyler Adams and Marc Roca pushing him down the pecking order.
But in a fresh interview with Polish media (16 March), Klich has admitted he grew angry at how little he was being used despite the team’s poor form, but revealed what he told directors about a future return to the club to reach 200 appearances for the club.
“I wanted to finish my contract at Leeds and leave in one-and-a-half years. I knew before the season that I wouldn’t be a core player and would be coming on from the substitutes’ bench. I agreed to this role and was curious to see how I would handle it myself.
“For the first few games it still looked good, I felt OK. Then we started to play very poorly and I thought I should have had a few chances to play from the start. However, I didn’t get any, which I was angry about.
“I have 195 games at Leeds and I told our directors when my contract was terminated that I would still be back for those five games. We’ll see how it all turns out.”

Most Leeds fans are in agreement that Klich isn’t the player he once was, which is fair to suggest considering he is now 32-years-old and has a game based on energy.
But they would also be in agreement that he was massively underused by Jesse Marsch this season and the American’s refusal to use him from the start in games despite a number of factors has probably contributed to the position we’re in in the Premier League table currently.
Klich was a leader on the pitch and the fact that he mentions in the interview that the players in the dressing room were begging him not to leave shows how much he was valued at Elland Road.
Unfortunately that is now a thing of the past and we can only use “what ifs” when talking about Klich this season, but hopefully he will be given the opportunity to get back to Leeds one day and get a chance to hit 200 appearances and get another big goodbye from the fans.
