Mateusz Klich could be out in the cold if Leeds United sign Brenden Aaronson
Mateusz Klich appears to be the right player to “thrive” in Jesse Marsch’s system but could suffer if Leeds United sign Brendan Aaronson says Graham Smyth.
The club failed in a protracted pursuit of the American midfielder during the January transfer window, but are expected to return in the summer, and Fabrizio Romano told Que Golazo it was “good news” on that front that Marsch had arrived.
But Smyth fears that Klich might be the fall guy if the transfer target from Red Bull Salzburg arrives.
Writing in the Yorkshire Evening Post he said: “It would make little sense to sign a midfielder like Brendan Aaronson and cast Matuesz Klich aside, when the early indications of the Marsch era are that he’s exactly the kind of player who could thrive in this new narrow system.
“Klich is a player who links play well in tight spaces, he runs all day and if his running and intensity are channeled in a less hectic pressing process he will provide energy and nuisance factor, either as a starter or a substitute.”
Squad depth
The Whites boss has shown he is no fool, so he surely won’t edge out a player who works well for him.
The Polish midfielder put himself on the line at Wolves during the 3-2 win, sustaining a concussion in a collision with a teammate before still getting in the middle of sideline confrontations, according to Phil Hay.
The squad clearly needs more depth, and flexibility, so greater options are no bad thing.

Coming up empty handed during the transfer window was largely down to Victor Orta focusing so heavily on Aaronson.
The summer is thought to be a much better time to bring him in, with the season over, and the Austrian’s Champions League run done.
There is no reason to think that the two could not operate in the same system, with Aaronson a more advanced midfielder.
The point stands however that in their rush to reinforce the playing staff the club make reasoned decisions.
Last summer’s business of Junior Firpo and Dan James have not been a roaring success so this year needs to be different.
In other Leeds United news, Barcelona reportedly offer a 4-year deal to a major European player, throwing Raphinha’s move into doubt.
