Mateo Joseph hailed as Leeds United wonderkid set for senior role
Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph has wowed Tony Dorigo who also saw him in action against Portsmouth on 10 August.
The Whites played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against the newly promoted side at Elland Road in their opening clash of the campaign.
Joseph, 20, started the game but was taken off in the second half.
Speaking to the Square Ball on 16 August, Dorigo said at 16:52: “Mateo Joseph, I certainly think he will be the next one to come through. Really impressed with him in pre-season. I thought he played well against Portsmouth. He’s unlucky not to score.”
Mateo Joseph needs to prove why he can shine at Leeds United this season
With Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter having departed and Patrick Bamford’s form fluctuating, the stage is set for Joseph to seize his moment at Leeds.
At 20, Joseph’s performance against Portsmouth, despite not scoring, showcased his potential.
His physicality, goal-scoring instinct and ability to stretch defences are precisely what the Whites have been lacking.
This season presents a golden opportunity for the Spaniard to not only prove his worth but to establish himself as a first-team regular.
His pre-season form and the confidence expressed by figures like Dorigo underline the expectations around him.
If he can translate his potential into consistent performances, Joseph could become the focal point of Leeds’ attack, filling the void left by his predecessors and alleviating the pressure on Bamford.
This is his season to shine, where every game could be a step towards cementing his place in the squad.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are locked in a transfer battle to sign a defender keen on leaving a Premier League club.
