‘Massive risk’ – Dermot Gallagher shares verdict on two incidents in Leeds win v Fulham
Dermot Gallagher has claimed that Anthony Taylor got both penalty decisions right as Leeds United picked up their first three points of the season against Fulham.
The Whites swept their newly-promoted side 4-3 at Elland Road, and that has seen them move into the top half of the Premier League.
Goals from Helder Costa, Mateusz Klich and Patrick Bamford handed Leeds the points, although the game wasn’t shy of controversy in West Yorkshire.
Robin Koch gave away his second penalty in as many weeks for a challenge on Joe Bryan, who only minutes later was penalised for a shove on Bamford.
Gallagher claimed that both decisions were spot on, despite Koch not actually making any contact with Bryan in his challenge.
“It’s a penalty,” he said on Sky Sports.
“When you go to ground like that you take a massive risk and you have to win the ball. He doesn’t get the ball, it’s just moved away, and he gets the man, that’s the key thing.”
The former Premier League referee was much clearer on Leeds’ penalties, admitting that Bryan took a massive risk when making contact.
“You just cannot do that, it’s a straight shove in the back. It’s a massive risk to take and he had to endure the consequences.”
Despite Gallagher being one of the best officials during his time in the middle in the Premier League, his verdicts on Ref Watch aren’t the best.
It appears that on every single decision, he just seems to agree with the decision made by the man in the middle.
Take his answer for the Koch challenge on Bryan, the German didn’t actually make contact with the Fulham man, but he claims he “got the man”, something that certainly didn’t happen.
Paul Merson agreed with us, he claimed that it was an “unbelievable” decision by Taylor and that it was never a penalty.
We all knew that officiating could ruffle some feathers this season with the addition of VAR, and it hasn’t exactly helped Leeds out so far.
