Mark Lawrenson predicts result of Leeds United Premier League clash v West Ham United
Mark Lawrenson believes Leeds United’s last two games could have a lasting affect when they take on West Ham on Wednesday night.
The Whites claimed a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Newcastle last time out, following defeat to Manchester City in their first game back after the World Cup, while the Hammers have lost their last five in a row in the Premier League.
But with just two points separating the sides and both sides within touching distance of the relegation zone, Lawrenson is backing the visitors to claim a much-needed win because of their “know-how in the dugout”.
“Leeds were a little bit unlucky against Man City, and did well at Newcastle, but those two games could have really taken it out of them,” he said in his Paddy Power predictions column (2 January).
“West Ham are on a poor run but they’ll be fine. Two wins and they’d be in mid-table, and they’ve got the quality in the squad and know-how in the dugout. Leeds 0-2 West Ham.”
This game falls under the must-win category without a doubt, because a win can really put some separation between Leeds and the rest of the pack.
There won’t ever be a better time to face West Ham, who have lost five-in-a-row, are having huge trouble with injuries in defence especially and are totally out of form.
Leeds on the other hand are playing relatively well after their own rut earlier in the season and the performance against Newcastle showed that the quality is there to dig in deep and defend when they need to.
But we have got plenty of quality in our attacking third of the pitch too and with West Ham struggling, we must go for it and look to claim all three points, rather than ensure they don’t take them.
It’s a big game for Marsch to help the Whites progress but also put more pressure on a rival, and it’s one that cannot be missed.
