Mark Lawrenson predicts outcome of Leeds United Premier League clash v Newcastle United

Mark Lawrenson has backed Newcastle United to come out 2-0 winners as the Magpies get set to host Leeds United at St James’ Park.

Jesse Marsch’s side head to the North East looking to avoid a third Premier League defeat in a row after Manchester City ran away comfortable 3-1 winners at Elland Road on Wednesday (28 December).

Newcastle are currently flying high in the Champions League places having only lost one Premier League game so far in the 2022/23 season. Former BBC pundit Lawrenson believes it should be a routine afternoon for Eddie Howe’s side.

“Leeds were really competitive against City. They were always under the pump but if they had got to half-time at 0-0 then who knows what might have happened,” wrote Lawrenson (Paddy Power predictions, 29 December).

“Newcastle just keep going and they’ve still only lost once this season. Pretty much everyone’s fit and they’re really firing. Newcastle 2-0 Leeds.”

Find a way

Leeds will be under no illusions that the trip to the North East will pose a similar challenge to the one they faced against Manchester City in their last Premier League fixture. Howe has worked wonders since taking the job on Tyneside, with their home form proving to be the catalyst for their superb start to the season.

The Magpies have been extremely hard to break down and are also finding the back of the net on a regular basis. It’s up to Marsch to find a way to stifle Newcastle’s main threats. Staying defensively rigid is a must for the Whites, after yet again, conceding far too many goals so far this season.

When it comes to the league table a win could be vital for Leeds, with some of their relegation rivals also facing tough tests over the New Year period. Everton face a daunting trio to The Etihad and Wolves host Manchester United, therefore a win or even a point could put some daylight between Leeds and the bottom three.
