Marcelo Bielsa provides Kalvin Phillips injury update
Rumours were swirling this morning about Kalvin Phillips being missing for the Leeds United game against Brighton today and for once they turned out to be true.
However, some of the wilder claims for why were wide of the mark.
In a pre-match interview on Amazon Prime, Marcelo Bielsa confirmed that Phillips had picked up a knock.
The 25-year-old who put in a Man of the Match performance in Leeds’ last Premier League encounter will miss out on the Brighton game because of a niggle on his knee.
Defender Robin Koch replaced the England international and played in his midfield position, rather than a back three – which many expected to see at kick-off. Winger Helder Costa also missed the game through injury
Speaking about their absence on Amazon’s pre-game Premier League coverage, Bielsa said, “Kalvin picked up a knock behind his knee and Helder has an injury to his back.”
Need him back soon
The loss of Phillips has been a blow and Leeds put in a rudderless first 45 minutes against Brighton.
Gjanni Alioksi gave away a stupid penalty to hand the home side the lead and we’ve never looked like scoring.
Jack Harrison is the only player who’s shown any zip while Koch has looked out of place in Phillips’ position.
It shows again how important Phillips is and how vital it is that we get adequate cover for him in the summer.
Talking about Phillips recently Southgate said, per the Yorkshire Evening Post, “He’s adapted really well to international football, he’s a fabulous character to have around, fantastic athlete and he uses the ball really well.”
We couldn’t be happier for Phillips who was impressing the England coach even during our Championship days.
Now he’s taken the step up to Premier League football and has also taken his game to the next level.
We just need cover for him now.
