Marcelo Bielsa looked dejected after 1-0 defeat to Southampton

Leeds United were quite below par during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton, and Marcelo Bielsa was not happy.

The Whites headed into the international break on the back of a narrow 1-0 win against Watford, and they were hoping to pick up their second Premier League win of the campaign at St. Mary’s.

However, the absence of Raphinha – who could not return on time from international duty with Brazil – and injuries to Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford meant Leeds were in for a hard time against the Saints.

As shared by BBC commentator and reporter Chris Wise on his personal Twitter account, Bielsa cut a forlorn figure during his post-match interview.

He said: “Leeds’ fans have been treated to some exceptional performances since their return to the Premier League, but that has to be one of their worst.

“Bielsa looks pretty dejected in his post-match interview.”

Uninspiring

Bielsa handed opportunities to players who would not have started if everyone was fit, but not all of them took their chances.

With just a win in eight Premier League games and four defeats, Leeds find themselves 17th in the table, and while it is too early to start talking about a relegation battle, their head coach would prefer to see his side somewhere up the log.

The Argentine is most likely very worried after seeing some of the performances his team have produced this term, and finishing in the top half of the table like they did last term could prove herculean this season.

With the Whites squad often battling one injury or a suspension at one time or another, counting on having everyone available all time is probably off the cards, and Leeds definitely could do with quality depth right now.

That seems to be missing at the moment, and if their second-string team are struggling against a team who just picked up their first win of the season, their chances of picking up necessary points without some of their key players are as slim as they come.
