Manager claims Leeds must go to European courts if Championship is cancelled
SC Cambuur boss Henk de Jong has claimed that Leeds United should go to the European courts if the Championship is cancelled this season.
The Dutch leagues were all classed as null and void recently meaning there will be no promotion or relegation, despite Cambuur being 11 points clear at the top of the second tier.
The EFL have released a statement sharing that the main goal is to conclude the season and that it could resume as early as the beginning of June.
De Jong did compare the two and added that the size of the club makes it that Leeds should be knocking on UEFA’s door if the Championship is cancelled.
“At first [cancelling the leagues] was only going to affect the big clubs, and we are a little club,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“But in England, you have Leeds United, a very big club, and they are going up, right?
“Well then [if the league is cancelled] they have to go to the European court and say: At the top, the clubs have to follow UEFA rules, but we have to follow the English rules, how is that fair?”
There would be outrage up and down the country if leagues were cancelled. Liverpool would miss out on their first-ever Premier League title and Leeds could potentially lose the chance to be back in the top-flight after nearly 20 years outside.
Imagine what could be on the line for Leeds in promotion, Robbie Fowler suggested they could miss out on up to £100million if it was cancelled – a club can simply not miss out on that.
