'Magnificent' - Sky pundit blown away by 24y/o after 'best performance' in Leeds shirt v Everton
Stephen Warnock was blown away by the performance of Leeds United mainstay Kalvin Phillips in the 1-0 win against Everton.
The Sky Sports pundit believes it was the midfielders’ best performance since promotion to the Premier League this season.
Phillips has drawn attention from nearly every pundit in football this weekend, with Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness also impressed.
Speaking on Sky Sports, via the Yorkshire Evening Post, Warnock admitted he was blown away by Phillips at Goodison Park.
“His best performance in a Leeds shirt in the Premier League,” he said. “I think he was outstanding from start to finish.
“Reading of the play, then playing simple, letting the players in front of him play. I thought he was brilliant. Magnificent from him.
“Gareth Southgate will be delighted with his performances, and I think he’s got a big decision to make as to who he plays in that holding position, whether it be him or Declan Rice.”
Phillips was superb in Merseyside.
The 24-year-old completed 80% of his total 107 actions according to WyScout, as well as a 95% pass success rate at Goodison Park.
Defensively, he was immense. Phillips made six interceptions, and also completed an impressive 12 recoveries against the Toffees.
In terms of England and Declan Rice, Phillips is outperforming the West Ham man in nearly every department this season – thankfully, Southgate was in attendance to witness this masterclass.
We have no doubts that Phillips will be back at St George’s Park in March, and these stats prove that Southgate will be more than tempted to include him more in games moving forward towards the EUROs.
