Luke Humphries hits back at Leicester crowd as Leeds United chants go too far

Luke Humphries has urged darts fans to leave the football chants at home after he received Leeds United taunts during the 2024 World Grand Prix Darts in Leicester.

The lifelong Leeds fan pulled off a fantastic comeback against Stephen Bunting on Monday [7 October] to eliminate the crowd favourite and advance to the next round with a 2-1 victory.

‘Leeds are falling apart again’ echoed around the Mattoli Arena in Leicester throughout the match and Humphries hit back at the chants in an interview with SportsBoom [7 October], urging the fans to focus on the darts.

He said: “Let’s leave football at home, we’re at the darts now.

“I support Leeds [United], everyone knows that, but let’s leave the football chants at home. We are darts players, we’re not footballers.

“If I’m in a football field and Leeds are playing against whoever and they’re chanting it to me whilst I’m there, then I’ll accept it, love it, and embrace it, but it’s just constant.”

Leeds United are not falling apart

It is not so much the chant itself that riled Humphries, but more so the fact that it is chanted constantly now and is rather tiresome given it’s a completely different spot.

While Leeds will be reeling from the 3-3 draw against Sunderland in which Illan Meslier gifted the hosts a 97-minute equaliser at the Stadium of Light, the club are hardly falling apart in the Championship.

Daniel Farke has turned around a shockingly underwhelming start to the campaign to lift his side into fifth place in the table, just three points behind Sunderland and Sheffield United joint-top.

Chris Wilder’s unbeaten Sheffield United side will travel to Elland Road after the international break and it presents the perfect opportunity for the Whites to bounce back after the disappointment of dropping points against another promotion rival.

Leeds have an abhorrent record against sides expected to challenge for the promotion places this season, with three draws against West Brom, Norwich City and Sunderland, plus a 1-0 home loss to Burnley.

The Whites must start collecting points from the teams around them soon. The side entered the new Championship campaign as favourites to win the division and have thus far endured mixed fortunes but are still on track to challenge at the top of the table.

It is far too soon to press the panic button at Elland Road, but Leeds are yet to send a statement of intent to the rest of the Championship this season and that must change against Sheffield United.
