Local journalist blown away by Leeds United sensation James Debayo v Newcastle Under-21s

James Debayo put in an impressive performance for the Leeds United under-21s as they sealed a 4-2 win over Newcastle on Monday afternoon.

The defender was solid at the back and despite the concession of two goals, he looked relatively untroubled and was named one of the standout performers in the game.

LeedsLive reporter William Jackson was in attendance at the game and he gave the 18-year-old an 8/10 rating.

He wrote, “Looks very comfortable at this level. He provided a touch of class at the back and never looked troubled by Newcastle’s efforts.”

Budding superstars

Leeds are well-known for their solid academy system and we could see a number of their youngsters on show during the game.

They were hungry and ready for the match ahead and delivered the goods to secure the victory for their side.

Debayo’s name doesn’t come up often as players who are ready to make that breakthrough and become first-team players, but he had a solid game too.

We certainly will be keeping an eye out on him as he appears to be someone with a high ceiling and could go places with the right coaching.

It remains to be seen how this crop of youngsters fares in the next two or three years and how many are ready to make the jump to the senior side.

There certainly will be some players that are no longer at the club as well but that’s the nature of the game and we’re expecting the academy to be in better shape by then.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites could now be looking at an award-winning Ligue 1 ace to bring to Elland Road in January.
