Gary Lineker is stunned that Adama Traore won’t be credited with an assist for Illan Meslier’s own-goal as Leeds United lost 1-0 to Wolves on Friday.
In the 64th minute, Traore hit a shot from outside the penalty area that struck the crossbar and rebounded into the back of the net via Meslier’s back.
It was a rotten stroke of luck for the Whites, who looked the more likely team to win out of the two at Molineux.
Lineker felt sorry for Meslier after he went down as scoring the own goal but couldn’t believe that Traore isn’t awarded an assist.
Speaking on Match of the Day on Saturday night, Lineker said: “What about this? Bad luck.”
Martin Keown replied: “I love watching this player (Traore) play. You cannot believe there’s no goals in 43 matches in the Premier League and no assists this season. That doesn’t go down as an assist.”
Lineker responded by saying: “That’s outrageous.”
Keown added: “It is. It’s a brilliant effort.
“He’s so powerful and quick and it’s just him finding his best football and he hasn’t been able to do that this season. That will help him.”
Football can be cruel
Meslier has had a bit of a topsy-turvy season for Leeds in the Premier League.
The 20-year-old has started all but one of the Whites’ top-flight fixtures this term, keeping seven clean sheets in 23 appearances.
According to stats by Wyscout, only West Brom’s Sam Johnstone has faced more shots than Meslier in Europe’s top five leagues this season while the ex-Lorient shot-stopper ranks third for saves in the Premier League.
There have been moments where he should have done better but there have been games where he has looked unbeatable.
Unfortunately, against Wolves, no one could beat Meslier other than a cruel slice of luck.
We have no issues with Meslier trying to make the save to deny Traore’s shot but if he didn’t attempt to save it, it wouldn’t have been a goal. Which is an awful reality for a goalkeeper.
Meslier will bounce back from this.
Next up for Leeds is a clash against Southampton at Elland Road on Tuesday night.
We expect him to be hungry to keep a clean sheet while the rest of the defence could certainly do their part to.
