Liam Gallagher shares four-word Leeds United verdict ahead of Championship play-off final

Liam Gallagher has shared which team he would like to see claim promotion to the Premier League as Leeds United prepare to face Southampton in the Championship play-off final.

Following a resounding 4-0 win over Norwich City on Thursday 16 May, Daniel Farke’s side have booked their spot at Wembley against the Saints, who managed a 3-1 victory against West Brom.

The two Championship sides will go head-to-head on Sunday 26 May, and the Whites will be hoping to pip Southampton to promotion despite already losing twice to them this season.

When asked if Leeds were going to win the play-off final, Gallagher replied via X on Saturday (18 May): “Hope so – love Leeds.”

Can Leeds United secure Premier League promotion v Southampton?

Leeds will need to put their history of play-off heartbreak behind them if the team are to beat Southampton at Wembley in the final and claim promotion straight back to the Premier League.

Farke’s squad have been unable to take any points off Russell Martin and his Saints squad this season, losing 3-1 and 2-1 earlier in the league campaign despite finishing above them in the table.

Southampton are clearly a team that the Whites struggle to compete against in 90 minutes, showcased by their two meetings so far this season. However, in the play-offs, anything can happen.

Leeds will take plenty of confidence from their 4-0 thrashing of Norwich at Elland Road on Thursday, claiming just their second victory in eight matches.

Both Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter seemed to spark back into form after failing to have much attacking presence over the last few weeks, which could be key against the Saints.

The return of Dan James from injury could also be quite important, though it is unknown whether Patrick Bamford will be fit enough for the final at Wembley.

In other Leeds news, Cresswell and Gelhardt are set to consider an Elland Road exit this summer if the club get back to the Premier League.
