Liam Cooper opens up on ‘worst day of my life’ after Leeds United Premier League relegation

Liam Cooper has described his relegation from the Premier League with Leeds United as the “worst day” of his life.

The centre-back was part of the Whites team that suffered the drop to the Championship in May, when they lost to Tottenham on the final day.

Cooper currently captains the side under Daniel Farke this season, with the West Yorkshire club sitting 12th in the Championship.

As per BBC Sport, when asked the question “What does it mean to represent Leeds?” Cooper replied: “Our song sums it up; ‘Ups and downs.’

“We’ve been through it all together. Getting promoted was probably the best year of my life, the best day of my life. And then last season, getting relegated, it was the worst day of my life, and that’s what sport does to you.”

Tough moment

It was a very difficult day for the Whites when they were relegated from the top-flight, but it was always coming to the club due to their struggles throughout the season.

Cooper was part of a squad that failed in several areas, with plenty of changes taking place in the dugout as Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce all had spells as manager.

A poor defensive showing and a lack of goals going forward saw the West Yorkshire club finish in 19th place on 31 points, five shy of 17th-placed Everton.

The Toffees managed to stay up on the final day of the season under Sean Dyche as they beat Bournemouth, but Harry Kane inspired Tottenham to secure all three points against Leeds to send them down.

A lot of the senior Whites players have since left the club, but Cooper remains at Elland Road, and he is now among those trying their best to get Leeds back to the big time at the first time of asking.

In other Leeds United news, Farke is “totally convinced” that one “unbelievable” Whites ace can improve.
