Leo Hjelde unlikely to play for Leeds United first-team again this season after injury blow

Leo Hjelde is unlikely to play again for the Leeds United first team this season due to injury, according to LeedsLive.

The news outlet claims that Hjelde, 18, is recovering from a knee injury that has kept him sidelined since he was forced off in the 3-0 defeat at Everton on 12 February.

It is understood that Leeds will decide in the coming weeks on whether or not the Norway Under-21s defender will undergo surgery on his knee.

Huge blow

Hjelde has played three times for Leeds United’s senior side since joining from Celtic in the summer.

He’s been absolutely brilliant in all of those three appearances too, playing as both a left-sided centre-back and a left-back.

Hjelde was on Marcelo Bielsa’s bench a lot in the Premier League.

He made 11 matchday squads until his injury against Everton last month, showing that he was a regular part of the former manager’s senior squad at Elland Road.

Jesse Marsch would likely call upon Hjelde had he been available at Leicester on Saturday because the young Norwegian defender really has been that good.

It’s such a shame that he’s set to miss the rest of the season.

It hopefully shouldn’t hamper his progress that much as there are fewer than three months to go until the season ends.

However, it’s still a major blow for the promising young defender, who does look as though he could cement his spot in the first-team squad next season based on what we’ve seen this term.

In other Leeds United news, Marsch was irritated by one Leeds senior player in the loss at Leicester.
