Leo Hjelde could return for Leeds United before season ends after surgery blow

Leo Hjelde might not miss the rest of the season after the Leeds United defender underwent surgery, according to Phil Hay.

Hjelde, 18, has been out of action with a knee injury he suffered against Everton on 12 February.

He’s had to undergo surgery in a bid to fix his issue and could be back in action before the season ends with The Athletic journalist Hay relaying what Jesse Marsch said about the youngster today (9 March).

Writing via his personal Twitter account, Hay said: “Leo Hjelde has undergone surgery on the knee injury he suffered against Everton.

“Marsch [hopeful] that he might be available before the end of the season.”

LeedsLive reported on 6 March that Hjelde is unlikely to play again this term but that might no longer be the case.

Great news

Hjelde isn’t the only Leeds player to undergo surgery lately.

Tyler Roberts will definitely miss the rest of the season after it was confirmed earlier this week [7 March] that he’s had to have an operation on a ruptured hamstring tendon.

In December, Kalvin Phillips also had to go under the knife due to a hamstring injury. He could be back in action very soon though, thankfully.

Leeds have not had the best of luck with injuries but with Hjelde, he’s a young, athletic lad who shouldn’t really be fazed too much by this setback.

The Norway Under-21 international has been superb in the three senior appearances he’s had for Leeds since joining from Celtic in the summer.

He’s also done well in the Under-23s.

Hjelde’s ability on the ball and also his versatility to play at left-back mean that he’s someone who fans should keep a close eye on in the coming years.

In other Leeds United news, Marsch was irritated by one Leeds senior player in the loss at Leicester.
