Leeds & WBA may be hit by ‘Catastrophic’ financial ramifications if EFL copy Eredivisie – report

Leeds United and West Brom could be hit by “catastrophic” financial ramifications if the EFL decides to scrap the season the same way the Eredivisie has, according to the Mirror.

Earlier this week, the Netherlands’ football authorities called the 2019/20 season to an end, meaning the Eredivisie will not have a winner and have no relegation and no promotion from the second-tier.

Cambuur were set to win promotion to the Eredivisie and their head coach Henk de Jong has called the decision the “biggest disgrace in the history of Dutch sports”.

If the EFL and Premier League decide to follow in the footsteps of the KNVB, then it means that, like Cambuur, Leeds and West Brom will be unable to win promotion to the top-flight and that could cause major financial issues at both Elland Road and The Hawthorns.

The Mirror claims that Leeds pay over £6million-a-year for manager Marcelo Bielsa and his coaching staff – money that could be tough to pay off if another season in the Championship is on the cards.

The feeling among Leeds fans is that Bielsa is unlikely to stay on another season if the club fails to win promotion but given the extenuating circumstances, he may think differently.

As for West Brom, they have another year of parachute payments if they miss out on going up by Slaven Bilic is another well-respected manager who is perhaps below his level in the Championship.

Both Leeds and the second-placed Baggies will have a good case to launch legal action against the EFL if they do follow in the footsteps of the KNVB.
