Leeds United youngster Connor Teale signs for Fleetwood Town
Fleetwood Town have confirmed that they have signed Leeds United starlet Connor Teale, announcing the permanent capture on their official website.
The 18-year old young defender had made several appearances for Leeds’ Under-18s side this season, playing eight times in the U18 Premier League as well as once in the FA Youth Cup. [Transfermarkt]
Teale will work under former Leeds boss Simon Grayson at Highbury Stadium, having signed a contract that lasts until 2023 with an option to extend the deal.
Teale’s contract with the Whites was set to expire this summer, though it isn’t clear whether or not Leeds had planned on retaining the defender beyond the current campaign.
Leeds currently possess a talented crop of young players including Joe Gelhardt, Crysencio Summerville and Cody Drameh, so perhaps Teale may have felt that regular game time was more attainable elsewhere.
With Teale out of contract this summer, though it can’t yet be proved definitively, it wouldn’t be surprising if the defender signed for Fleetwood before becoming a free agent at the end of the season.
It isn’t uncommon for players who know that they’re set to leave the club to find their next destination before the end of the campaign, and that could very well be the scenario that Teale found himself in.
Before the uncertainty of the recent Super League announcement, it was clear that the Whites would look to build upon their success this season by aiming for European qualification next season.
If the club plan on doing so they’ll need to further strengthen their options this summer, particularly their defence given how often they’ve conceded this season.
Leeds’ plans to continue building toward the future may have seen Teale’s opportunities further decrease, and so while his departure is understandable, it shouldn’t prove that impactful either.
