Leeds United youngster Mateo Joseph nominated for Premier League award

Leeds United youngster Mateo Joseph has been nominated for the Premier League 2 player of the month award for September.

The 18-year-old has eight goals in six games for Leeds under-21s and scored a hat trick against Stoke City on Friday evening [30 September].

Joseph’s display was brandished as “fantastic” by under-21s coach Michael Skubala [Leeds Live, 1 October] and now he has received further recognition after being nominated alongside the likes of Chelsea’s Omari Hutchinson and Crystal Palace forward John-Kymani Linton Michael Gordon.

Promising signs

Joseph is a player that has gone somewhat under the radar of late when it comes to Leeds’ youngsters. Willy Gnonto has had lots of attention of late, along with the red-hot Sonny Perkins who can’t stop scoring at the moment.

Joe Gelhardt is another one of Jesse Marsch’s youngsters who has certainly got more attention than Joseph. However, with eight goals already this season, should we instead be casting a keener eye on the Spanish striker?

It’s certainly not an awful dilemma for the American to have when considering which of his younger players he wants to hand a first-team opportunity. Gnonto would seem the most obvious choice for Marsch to make considering that he signed him in the summer and was keen to add him to his ranks. However, he is yet to really get going in the under-21s.

In a couple of years, Leeds could well have three to four top-quality strikers to call upon who are all entering the primes of their careers. The youth recruitment at Elland Road is certainly something to be admired.
