Leeds United winger Ian Poveda set for lengthy absence after ankle injury on loan at Blackburn Rovers
Leeds United winger Ian Poveda has sustained a “significant” ankle injury while on loan at Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
Confirmed by Blackburn’s official Twitter account on Tuesday morning, the 21-year-old is set for an “extended spell on the sidelines” after a first-half incident at Bristol City on Saturday.
Rovers boss Tony Mowbray said: “The news isn’t particularly good, he’s broken his fibula and has some ligament damage.
“We’ve been in touch with Leeds United and it looks as if he’ll have an operation to insert a plate.
“We’ll see what Leeds want to do because he’s their player, but he will be out for a significant period of time.”
Big blow for Poveda
Just as Poveda looked to be making his mark in senior football, a horrible injury appears to have robbed him of the 2021/22 campaign.
No timeline has been set on his return, but it sounds like he will miss most of the season now, or at least the majority of it.
Poveda scored his first goal earlier this month in a 3-1 win over Sheffield United, and that strike helped to earn him a start against Bristol City on Saturday, the first time he has started successive games for Rovers.
But he looks set to head back to Thorp Arch now, at least until he makes a full recovery, and it could be a long road ahead for him.
The ex-Manchester City youngster has a contract with the Whites until 2024, so at least there is some security on his part.
Leeds will now be expected to work closely with him again as they seek to help him through his recovery.
In other Leeds United news, this ex-La Liga boss has rejected a managerless club and could plot a move to the Whites in 2022.
