Leeds United will have to pay £17m for Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino

Liverpool have placed a £17million price tag on Leeds United target Takumi Miniamino’s head as first revealed by The Athletic on Wednesday [1 June].

The Atheltic had suggested that the Whites were previously interested in a move for the attacker along with Inter Milan.

However, a £17million fee for a player that has started one Premier League game seems slightly farcical.

Granted, Minamino is Liverpool’s leading scorer in both domestic cup competitions this season.

He scored four of his goals against Norwich, and then also hit the back of the net against Cardiff and Preston North End.

No disrespect to those three sides but they are hardly opponents you can judge a title-challenging Premier League player on.

To slap a £17million price tag on a player that was purchased for £7.5million two years ago is nothing short of ridiculous.

If he had gone on to hit the heights of Liverpool’s other attackers then it would’ve been completely justified.

Jesse Marsch should stay at arm’s length from any potential deal for the Japan international if that is the asking price.

He would be far better off using that kind of transfer fee to focus on a younger, up and coming player who could potentially be of some value to Leeds in the future.

It is sometimes hard not to get dragged into paying big transfer fees in the hope of remaining competitive in the Premier League but Marsch must realise that players like Minamino are being offloaded because they are on a downward trajectory.

In other Leeds United news, Premier League rivals are looking to take advantage of the situation and flex their much larger financial muscles.
