'No doubt' - Sky pundit picks when asked favourite for promotion between Leeds & West Brom
Kevin Phillips has predicted that West Brom may have the edge over Leeds United in the Championship promotion picture this season.
The Sky Sports pundit claimed that his former side has more firepower in their squad compared to the Whites for the remaining fixtures.
Phillips did admit that there wasn’t much separating the two sides, something which reflects in the table – Leeds top by one point.
Phillips went on to say that Marcelo Bielsa’s side had their blip at the right time this season, whereas West Brom not winning in two was not ideal.
“I don’t put a lot between them, I have watched both play a lot this season and they have both had sticky patches,” he told the Birmingham Mail.
“Fortunately for Leeds when they were going through that spell my answer was they are going through it at a time when they can still recover because there is plenty of games left.
“They have got a good squad – no doubt about that and I think it will go all the way between them and the Baggies – right the way to the end.
“When I look player for player there is not a lot in it if anything you would have to say West Brom have got more of a threat going forward in terms of goals, with the players they have got.”
Leeds have been perfect in their last five outings, winning every game without conceding a goal. It appears strange that Phillips has gone against that in this latest prediction given his old side has tough games coming up against the likes of Brentford.
Compare Phillips’ words to the prediction of expert Nate Silver. On his website, FiveThirtyEight, it is suggested that Leeds stand a 98% of promotion to the Premier League – promising.
West Brom, on the other hand, have an 88% chance, both very promising but also very much in favour of the Whites after a differing few weeks in the Championship – time will tell.
