Leeds United want to sign Raphael Guerreiro 'soon' as long-term left-back solution
Leeds United are striving for a long-term left-back solution and will attempt to prise Raphael Guerreiro away from Borussia Dortmund “soon”, according to Dean Jones
The Whites have struggled at the back this season, conceding 26 goals from their opening 14 Premier League games, and are therefore looking for defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old defender’s contract with the German giants is due to expire next summer, so Victor Orta will hope to lure his man at the turn of the year after the club were reportedly an admirer of the Portuguese left-back. [GiveMeSport]
And although they may be likely to meet some resistance, former Eurosport journalist Jones believes Orta and Jesse Marsch will try to reach an agreement with the left-back shortly.
He told GiveMeSport: “One thing they really want here is a long-term solution. They don’t want to be having to go back and find the next answer every year or so. That’s their vision at the moment.
“They do like Guerreiro, but it’s not necessarily an easy one to do. I think they’d like to try to get this one done soon.”
Get it done
Although Portugal were knocked out of the World Cup in a bitterly disappointing defeat to Morocco, the Dortmund man played a key role in the early stages of their tournament.
Guerreiro averaged a 6.96 average match rating (WhoScored) which was the fifth-best rating throughout the tournament in a squad brimming with international stars.
He found the back of the net in Fernando Santos’s side’s 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland and proved himself a brilliant attacking outlet for his national side throughout.
This season for Dortmund he already has six goal contributions in just 12 appearances – in an otherwise struggling side – and would surely represent a brilliant transfer if Leeds could get the deal done in January.
There is no doubting Guerreiro’s quality, and Marsch will be chomping at the bit to try and lure the Portuguese international away from a host of other European clubs who will likely be interested in signing him.
In other Leeds United news, Noa Lang will be available for a transfer away from Club Brugge in the coming months.
