Leeds United want to sign new goalkeeper as a ‘Priority’ amid Marcos Abad backroom departure

Leeds United want to sign a new goalkeeper as a priority this summer, after the club announced goalkeeper coach Marcos Abad is leaving.

The long-time goalkeeper coach revealed on his social media account (5 July) that he would be leaving after six years at Elland Road, with new manager Daniel Farke looking to bring in his own backroom staff.

And according to journalist Beren Cross there will be a restructure of the club’s goalkeeper department this summer, with the priority to sign a new number one during the transfer window.

“The France under-21 international is expected to depart Leeds after relegation this summer, though concrete links are yet to materialise,” he wrote.

“After going away to the European Under-21 Championship with his country, Meslier’s first day back is July 10.

“With Joel Robles out of contract and yet to take up the club’s pre-season invitation, Dani van den Heuvel is the most senior stopper currently in training. Kristoffer Klaesson is expected to link up, like Meslier, on July 10.

“United are planning to sign at least one senior goalkeeper this summer as one of the key priorities of the transfer window.”

Needed

It was evident that Leeds were in trouble last season when we were forced to drop Meslier from the starting lineup due to poor performances and could only call upon Joel Robles as his replacement.

Now Robles has left with his contract expiring, and Meslier’s previous interest from top-flight clubs means an exit is expected.

Leeds United

Leeds are now light on options in goal and if we’re serious about spending as little time in the Championship as possible then it simply has to be a priority to sign a new number one who is good enough to walk straight into the side.

There aren’t many names doing the rounds right now in terms of links, but with Farke only just entering the scene it’s fair to say they will start to emerge in the coming days and weeks.

We’ll find out what happens, but with Meslier’s stock arguably at an all-time low right now it wouldn’t be a shock to see him end up sticking around by default.

In other Leeds news, a Euro wonderkid could end up at Elland Road as Daniel Farke looks to use his connections in the market.
