Leeds United want to sign Blackburn defender Darragh Lenihan

Leeds United are one of the clubs in the race to sign Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan, according to TEAMtalk.

The Irishman is out of contract at Ewood Park at the end of this season and his performances under Tony Mowbray has alerted a host of Premier League clubs who may want him to come on a free.

Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Wolves and Everton are also rumoured to want the 27-year-old who has helped Blackburn to a surprise promotion challenge during this campaign.

“Lenihan will delay talks until the end of the season in the hope of helping Rovers go up,” TEAMtalk reported.

“We understand that Newcastle, Leeds, Aston Villa, Wolves and Everton are amongst the clubs to register their interest in landing the player on a prospective free transfer.”

As solid as they come

You won’t find a single Blackburn Rovers fan who would want to see Ireland international Lenihan leave the North-West club any time soon.

In December, FourFourTwo quoted Rovers boss Tony Mowbray as calling him a “special footballer” and a “man mountain”.

His contract situation at Ewood Park is certainly an alarming one for the club but that is to the benefit of Leeds United and the other potential suitors.

Marcelo Bielsa actually has some good options at the heart of the defence but given the injuries he has suffered this season, he will take anyone he can get and Lenihan may be a fantastic budget option.

Blackburn could well be playing Premier League football next season which may disrupt any plans for a move but there is quite a race developing for promotion in the Championship and there is still time for things to change.

Bielsa really should do what he can to bring Lenihan in as the most solid of backup players and someone who won’t cost an arm and a leg.

In other Leeds United news, Crysencio Summerville is still pushing for a January exit from Elland Road.
