Leeds United want to sign £10m Harry Winks as Tottenham exit nears

Leeds United are looking to battle Leicester for the signing of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks, according to CBS journalist, Ben Jacobs.

The Athletic reported on 28 June that the Foxes are eying up a £10million deal for the 27-year-old, who spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Sampdoria.

Jacobs has since revealed that Winks has no preference between moving to Leeds or the King Power Stadium.

“Leicester have looked at Harry Winks and Leeds have looked at Harry Winks as well,” Jacobs told City Chat (21m 38s, 28 June).

“There is an opportunity in the market that’s for sure Winks is in all likelihood surplus to requirements at Tottenham. He’s not going to have the right fit or have enough quality for Ange Postecoglou.

“From Leicester’s point of view, they could do a deal at a decent rate.

“Negotiations are underway, and I don’t think there is a player preference between Leeds and Leicester, but Leicester are a bit further along as far as negotiations are concerned.

“The pros are that he’s quite intelligent and he has the tenacity and energy for the Championship, but the downside is that he’s quite injury prone.”

Unlikely

With Leicester also in the hunt, this a move that is hard to envisage.

The Foxes are now looking to kick on with their transfer business after announcing Enzo Maresca as their new boss. It’s an interesting appointment but could reap long-term rewards. In fact, it’s not too dissimilar to Vincent Kompany taking the job at Burnley.

With Leeds being linked to another midfielder, Tyler Adams’ future could well be thrown into some sort of doubt. The American was a standout performer during the 2022/23 season and has been linked with Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham in recent weeks.

It’s hard to begrudge Adams for moving onto pastures new. The 24-year-old should be playing for a top-ten Premier League club at the very least. From Leeds’ perspective, they have to ensure they recoup a significant fee for their star man.

He’s still contracted to the club for a significant amount of time and cannot be allowed to depart for a cut-price fee.

In other Leeds United news, Sky Sports have hinted at a bidding war for this Elland Road ace.
