BBC commentator shares never-before-seen detail from Leeds United v Middlesbrough match

BBC commentator Mark Drury says the attire worn by the match officials in the game between Leeds United and Middlesbrough is something he has never previously seen.

The referee and his assistants certainly made themselves easy to spot at Elland Road for Saturday’s (2 December) Championship showdown

As pointed out by Drury, they were wearing bright orange tops and black shorts, ensuring they did not clash with either sides’ kits.

Commentating on the game for BBC Radio Tees [2 December, 15:20], Drury said: “The officials, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before, are all in bright orange this afternoon. It’s like watching the Netherlands!”

Eye-catching

You can tell winter has arrived in West Yorkshire as the officials are now wearing illuminous tops for afternoon kick-offs.

It was quite the sight, and did indeed look as though the referee was a member of the Oranje’s Total Football sides of the past.

There was certainly no hiding for the man in the middle during an action-packed contest at Elland Road – not least in the opening 45 minutes.

Darren England, who is widely regarded as one of the finest referees around, pointed to the spot to award Leeds a pen that Joel Piroe converted.

With the nights now closing in, the fixtures will come thick and fast for Daniel Farke’s men – and indeed everyone else in the Championship.

The Middlesbrough match was the first of eight between now and the visit of Birmingham City on New Year’s Day, which Leeds are now going into with some real momentum on their side.

In other Leeds United news, a pundit called out a Whites player for something he did in the first half against Middlesbrough.
