Leeds United v Millwall halted, player can ‘barely walk’ in crushing injury blow

Leeds United were stunned by Portsmouth on Sunday but looked to return to winning ways at Elland Road against Millwall three nights later.

The Whites got off to the best possible start (12 March) as Manor Solomon’s cross deflected into the net inside three minutes, the winger making a real habit of bagging early goals to put Leeds into the ascendancy.

Ao Tanaka sealed an eventual 2-0 triumph late on to return Daniel Farke’s men crucially to a victorious note.

As the first half ebbed to a close with the 1-0 scoreline intact, there was concern as a player had to be withdrawn and was struggling to walk as he limped from the field.

Leeds United v Millwall stopped for injury

Leeds are striving to return to the Premier League and Farke will be sincerely hoping he isn’t further rocked by injuries, having made one change to his line-up on the night with Ilia Gruev making way for Joe Rothwell.

Millwall will realistically struggle to mount a full-on play-off charge barring much of a miracle with all the sides who surround them in mid-table, but stranger things have happened.

However, their cause has not been helped by what happened 26 minutes in at Elland Road, as midfielder George Honeyman went down and had to be substituted for Billy Mitchell.

As Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post shared on X from the game (12 March), Honeyman could “barely walk” as he was withdrawn by visiting manager Alex Neil.

“Honeyman trudging off injured. I say trudging, he’s barely walking at all,” Smyth posted.

“Referee has to urge him off the pitch. Millwall’s sub wasn’t ready… Billy Mitchell comes on.”

Millwall hoodoo over after Elland Road win

Leeds have rarely been on the receiving end of a defeat too often this season, though it had already happened twice against Millwall heading into the midweek match-up between the two in West Yorkshire.

Millwall were winners in the reverse Championship fixture at The Den by a solitary goal, and then beat a rotated Leeds team 2-0 at Elland Road last month in the FA Cup.

The game was far from over at the break despite the Whites’ control, given that Neil’s Millwall had recovered from a half-time deficit to beat Watford at Vicarage Road last weekend.

But Farke’s side simply had to restore winning ways and managed to get the job done to regain some ground at the top of the table.

Next up comes the trip to Queens Park Rangers this Saturday (15 March), before which the international break arrives – not Farke’s favourite at this stage of the campaign, it must be said.
