Leeds United: USA media react to what Brenden Aaronson did v Jamaica

Leeds United loanee Brenden Aaronson came off the bench as a late substitute for the USA in their game against Jamaica on Thursday (21 March).

Although the 23-year-old, who is currently on loan at Union Berlin, didn’t have any direct impact on the game, his presence on the field did help inspire a late comeback in Dallas.

After Greg Leigh had opened the scoring for Jamaica after just one minute, a Cory Burke own goal levelled things up deep into injury time before Coventry City’s Haji Wright registered twice in extra time to hand the Americans a 3-1 victory in the Concacaf Nations League semi-final.

NBC Sports wasn’t overly impressed by Aaronson’s performance as it gave him a 5.5 rating, noting that he is “always a tornado” after he “spun out-of-control” a few times in his side’s win.

While the MLS Soccer website claimed the attacking midfielder was his “typical bundle of energy”, it said he didn’t show any quality or composure as he snatched at a couple of chances, earning him a 4.5 rating for his display.

GOAL wasn’t quite as critical in its assessment, though, handing him a 6 after claiming his energy was key to picking up the victory in extra time.

It sounds as though Aaronson showed some of the traits that were on display during his time at Leeds, with his tireless energy but lack of quality on the ball.

There is certainly no doubting the attacking midfielder’s effort levels, but his career has massively stalled since he initially made the move to Elland Road from Red Bull Salzburg in 2022.

While he grabbed his first two goals for Union Berlin in recent weeks, it’s largely been a disappointing campaign for him in Germany.

Alongside those two strikes, he hasn’t registered a single assist in his 30 appearances as it looks unlikely he will earn a permanent deal with the Bundesliga side.

It’s so far unclear whether or not he could play for the Whites again, but after he forced his way out of West Yorkshire last summer, there probably aren’t many people who would welcome him back.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are ready to sell a midfielder for £10.3million after what he told the media.
