Leeds United unlikely to sign two attacking talents this summer

Leeds United appear set to miss out on not one but two attacking targets this summer despite contrary links, according to Leeds Live.

Watford winger Ismaila Sarr was thought to be heading to Elland Road as recently as 11 August [Tutto Calcio Mercato] but the Senegalese international is thought not to be Yorkshire-bound anytime soon.

It is a similar story for former Manchester United and Chelsea ace Juan Mata who is still a free agent after his release from Old Trafford at the end of the 2021-22 season.

La Nueva Espana [15 July, page 46] reported that the White were set to win the race for the Spanish international attacking midfielder but Leeds Live now say that move is also not going to happen this summer.

Victor Orta is also targeting a striker but as of right now, it is not going to be Che Adams with no transfer movement active for Southampton’s Scottish international.

Being effectively ruled out of two new signings may seem like a bad thing for Leeds United fans but in this case, it might just be a bullet dodged by Orta.

Sarr has always shown flashes of brilliance during his time at Watford and he did so again on Monday night with a goal from his own half in the Championship away at West Brom.

But his problem has always been consistency and Jesse Marsch needs a player that he knows will perform to his absolute best for the vast majority of games rather than once every few matches.

Mata is a much more consistent performer but he is getting on in age now and he rarely featured for the Red Devils last season despite their struggles.

If Leeds want to make a real impact this season and challenge for a top half place, then their sights need to be set higher than these two individuals and their unlikeliness to sign is a blessing in disguise.

In other Leeds United news, the search for a striker, plus the emergence of another, could spell trouble for this Elland Road favourite in the near future.
