Leeds United unlikely to offer Junior Firpo new contract, could be sold this summer – Phil Hay

Leeds United are unlikely to offer Junior Firpo a new contract and he could be sold this summer, according to Phil Hay.

Writing on The Athletic website (12 March), the journalist reports that despite his good form this season the former Barcelona man is unlikely to be offered fresh terms on his current contract which is due to expire in 2025.

As a result transfer offers are likely to be well received, with the Whites likely to look at strengthening the position during the summer transfer window.

“With a year left on Firpo’s contract, it seems unlikely that a renewal will be on the table,” he wrote.

“If Leeds are to make progress and rebuild as a Premier League club this summer, left-back is a position that will need strengthening, so offers for Firpo would be well received.”

Leeds United must be smart in the transfer window

Usually at this stage of the season with the way Leeds have played, you would be quite confident that the club are going to earn automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

But with the way Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton have also been playing there are simply no guarantees and Leeds have to stay focused on the task at hand.

However, it does mean that the club’s summer transfer plans can’t be put into action just yet either as they don’t know what is going to be happening beyond this season.

With Firpo’s contract status as it is though, the club have to make a decision regardless of where the team will be playing their football and a sale probably makes the most sense.

Targets to replace him will vary depending on the division, but ultimately Firpo’s suitors are unlikely to change and the club can plan for it. It’s the right call, but they have to be smart about how they approach it.
