Leeds United transfer update as Weston McKennie wanted by ‘three or four’ Premier League clubs

On-loan Leeds United midfielder Weston McKennie is wanted by three or four Premier League clubs, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The American international is now unlikely to remain at Elland Road beyond his current loan spell, with a summer return to Juventus now on the cards (Tutto Sport, 26 May) after Leeds’ relegation to the Championship blowing any £30million-plus permanent move out the water.

McKennie started 16 Premier League games since his January loan move in an unsuccessful loan spell and was even pictured heading to London with his Leeds United exit now set in stone.

However, the 24-year-old could yet be returning to the Premier League next season.

According to former Eurosport journalist, Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport [30 May], the American is attracting interest from three or four Premier League clubs who are keen to hold conversations over a move.

He said: “I don’t think it’ll be the last we see of him in the Premier League though. I’ve been assured he still thinks he can succeed here.

“There are already three or four Premier League clubs that are keen to talk to him about a potential move.”

Much to offer

It’s safe to say McKennie’s short period in West Yorkshire was pretty underwhelming, considering he was supposed to provide the midfield thrust and quality they desperately needed alongside Marc Roca and Tyler Adams.

However, there is a case to argue that there was little he could do in the little time he was provided to thrive. Also, the huge managerial changes during his time there didn’t help at all, playing under three different managers.

Such a lack of stability and uncertainty at Elland Road wouldn’t do any wonders for even the best of Premier League players, so McKennie’s issues at Leeds United weren’t all down to him.

Also, the Leeds players have suffered from a lack of confidence all season long, hence their disappointing and inevitable relegation to the Championship. Five months given for McKennie to come in and swiftly change things at Elland Road simply is unfair to him.

The 24-year-old is still a quality performer, and should he be given the right conditions, stable coaching and belief at another club, he may well show the qualities Leeds United hoped they were getting when they signed him during the winter window.
