Leeds United transfer news: ‘Excellent’ Daniel Farke faced with ‘big money’ players who ‘want to leave’ – BBC pundit

Daniel Farke is an “excellent appointment” by Leeds United but has a big job to do in the transfer market that includes getting expensive wantaway players out, says Carlton Palmer.

The German’s long-awaited arrival was made official on 4 July after the club gave up waiting for EFL ratification of the 49ers’ takeover to come first, but with the transfer window having already been open since 14 June [Sky Sports].

First-team exits have now started to go through, with Robin Koch’s loan to Frankfurt the first confirmed, but Palmer believes there are various others who want out who the new manager has to shift to save the club money.

Palmer, the former Whites player and a BBC pundit, told Football League World of the new boss: “He guided Norwich to two promotions, with far less resources that were available to him at a canter.”

But added: “There’s a lot of work to be done at Leeds United in a short space of time when you come down from the Premier League.

“You’ve got players who want to leave, players on big money that you have to get out and players that you want to bring in.”

Catch up

There is so much to do at the club and relatively little time to do it, but it looks like Farke wants to be involved in all aspects so he doesn’t seem to be afraid of the challenge.

He has proven that he can navigate the Championship but that doesn’t mean he needs the task made harder by playing catch up from the get go.

Fellow relegated side Leicester have already spent significant money to sign Conor Coady and Harry Winks, while Farke still has to work out who he wants to keep from last season’s squad, and crucially who will agree to do so.

Any players on big contracts, even accounting for wage drops after relegation, who want to leave should probably be allowed to as long as replacements can be found.

Keeping hold of those who would rather be elsewhere could store up issues for a Championship season that will be a slog even if successful.

There will be a few characters such as Tyler Adams who will have options to leave but could be crucial if their buy-in can be secured, but otherwise there were far too many in this squad who underperformed last season and may be worth moving on either way.
