Leeds United transfer news: Deadline Day Charlie Cresswell to AC Milan update emerges live on Fabrizio Romano stream

AC Milan had a proposal in the works to move for Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell ahead of the transfer deadline, according to an update from Fabrizio Romano and his team.

In a live update on the Italian’s Kick stream on 1 February it emerged that the Serie A giants had looked at the 21-year-old as one of two potential centre-back options, with an alternative in Ligue 1, but are unlikely to make a signing on Deadline Day.

The Englishman has been linked to an exit within the Championship amid a January stand-off with Daniel Farke over his playing time, but the Whites were not prepared to strengthen a promotion rival and the manager has now brought him back into the fold.

Romano said (5.23pm): “Milan will not sign anybody, probably.”

Unexpected

Cresswell’s season has been a highly frustrating one with Farke giving him very few opportunities following his return from a breakout loan campaign at Millwall last term.

If Milan had come in with an offer before now the likelihood is that Leeds United would probably have been happy to accept, given it would have kept the highly-rated youngster out of the hands of league rivals.

His exit would have left the Whites looking short at centre-back, especially with Pascal Struijk out injured, so with January signings proving so difficult it appears the manager decided to address the issue with his unsettled defender and open the door again in the absence of many alternatives.

The Italian window closes at 7pm UK time so the potential for Cresswell to get a huge move to the San Siro has surely gone.

If he doesn’t get increased opportunities at Elland Road over the remainder of the season then he, and his father, are bound to be highly disappointed to know that an opportunity to join Milan didn’t develop but he now looks set to stay until the summer at least.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay reports that the Whites are in line to complete a “priority” incoming deal ahead of the deadline.
