Leeds United transfer news: Clubs hope Coventry lose play-off final as Viktor Gyokeres race hots up amid Brentford push
Brentford have “shown the most conviction” in the race to sign Coventry striker Viktor Gyokeres, which includes Leeds United, Everton and West Ham, according to the Daily Mail.
The Whites have been “on the trail” of the Swede but it appears the Bees are now pushing to the head of the queue in the wake of Ivan Toney’s eight month ban for breaching betting rules.
The £25million-rated scorer is into the Championship play-off final against Cody Drameh’s Luton Town, and if the Sky Blues are successful he could yet remain there for next season in the top flight.
Gyokeres’ price tag has steadily risen through an eye-catching season, with Leeds United strongly linked for months, but amid a faltering bid to avoid relegation and developments elsewhere it looks like they have fallen some way behind.
Distant
It is surely going to take a miraculous final-day escape that surpasses even last season for the Whites to get a shot at signing Gyokeres now, with clubs hoping he loses at the weekend either way.

If he doesn’t make it to the Premier League via the show piece at Wembley then he looks sure to do so via the transfer market, and if Sam Allardyce can’t rescue Leeds they aren’t going to be in the running.
With Patrick Bamford’s and Rodrigo’s injuries making it all the more clear how this side needs a number nine added to it, Gyokeres would be a very attractive option after 21 goals in the second tier.
Georginio Rutter’s status appears to have never been lower at Elland Road after his ill-advised January signing, with the manager suggesting he doesn’t even have anyone behind the crocked senior pair.
If the Whites somehow wriggle out of their current predicament then they could do worse than inserting themselves back into the Gyokeres race before it’s too late.
But with Toney ruled out long-term it appears that Thomas Frank is pushing to beat the rush in the event that Drameh and Luton come out on top on Saturday (27 May).
