Leeds United transfer news: Charlie Taylor return from Burnley in the frame amid Josh Doig update

Charlie Taylor returning to Leeds United in the January transfer window could happen but a deal for Josh Doig looks “tough”, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist told One Leeds Fan Channel on 4 January that he “keeps hearing” the Burnley defender’s name when it comes to the Whites signing a left-back this month, which he believes is finally likely this window.

Leeds had been linked to a £5million-plus move for Verona’s Doig [Toro Goal, 31 December], but while Bailey hasn’t ruled out a push for the Scot it is former Elland Road man Taylor who continues to crop up instead.

Bailey said of Doig (10m 55s): “He’s a good player, I like Josh Doig a lot. Clearly full-back’s an area Leeds have been looking at on both sides.

“I haven’t heard him particularly for Leeds, Josh Doig, although it wouldn’t surprise me if they pushed for that. I don’t think you’d get him for £5m, I must admit I think that’s a tad low, but he’s an interesting one to keep an eye on.

“I keep hearing Charlie Taylor’s name in terms of some people coming back. I know he’s a player who Leeds fans I think are a bit indifferent about, but I think we’ll see a left-back in.

“Doig would be a tough one for Leeds to get done this month but never say never.”

Return?

Leeds United tried to bring Taylor back to the club in the summer transfer window but were thwarted by Burnley’s lack of cover.

After failing to make the squad for the first three of the Clarets’ Premier League games under Vincent Kompany he has become somewhat of a regular for the former Manchester City captain, and he started the FA Cup tie at Tottenham on 5 January.

So whether Burnley would be willing to let the 24-year-old leave now when they weren’t in the summer is perhaps open to question.

But with just six months remaining on his current contract and the top flight side potentially making their own signings in the winter window there may be some fire behind the smoke that Bailey has continued to hear.

Daniel Farke’s decision to terminate Djed Spence’s loan has come as a surprise given the full-back positions looked most in need of work this month, leaving the options weaker within days of the window opening.

Since Sam Byram’s fitness concerns have come back to the fore left-back above all looks to be the position that the Whites need to finally make a move at.

If an expensive deal for the sought-after Doig is impossible then perhaps a long-tipped reunion with Taylor is now due to become a reality.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay says one in-demand Whites player is “definitely not happy” at the club amid “loads” of interest.
