Leeds United transfer news as slow recruitment sees blow handed in pursuit of Reims midfielder Dion Lopy

Leeds United are now set to miss out on the services of Reims midfielder Dion Lopy due to their slow recruitment process.

After dropping down into the Championship, the Whites have just signed two first-team players – one of whom may not even strengthen the playing eleven – with Illan Meslier starting the season as the number one.

The other one, Ethan Ampadu, looks like a good signing but there’s still work to be done in the transfer market.

Leeds have seen as many as nine players leave this summer with Weston McKennie returning to Juventus making it 10.

In midfield itself, they’ve lost McKennie, Marc Roca, Adam Forshaw and Brenden Aaronson who has been deployed as a number 10 on occasion.

Signing new midfielders is definitely the priority but they’ve been handed a major blow, according to a recent report in the Daily Mail on Monday (7 August), they will not be signing Lopy.

The report claims that they were exploring a move for the Senegal international, 21, but he will now be joining Spanish side Almeria.

While they are a top flight club, they’re among the most cash-strapped ones in La Liga and the Whites could easily have been able to tempt him.

They would offer more wages and perhaps a bigger transfer fee too and they’re going to live to regret how slowly they’ve moved in this summer window.

The first game of the season against Cardiff City was a clear example that this side is nowhere near good enough to stay up and they desperately need to bring in new faces through the door.

In other Leeds United news, an update has emerged on the club’s pursuit to sign two centre-backs this summer with a winger now on the radar as well.
