Leeds United transfer news as Rodrigo offered to Atletico Madrid

Exit-bound Leeds United striker Rodrigo has been offered to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish journalist Aaron Dominguez.

The Spanish international reportedly has a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Elland Road for around £3m following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Following a challenging first year in English football, the £100k-per-week striker enjoyed an excellent campaign despite the club’s relegation, scoring 15 goals from 35 matches and according to journalist Dominguez, the Spaniard has been offered the chance of a return back home, with Atletico, who have been interested in his services (Fichajes.net, 22 May).

Taking to his personal Twitter account (11 July), he tweeted: “Rodrigo Moreno has been offered to Atletico Madrid.”

Several reports had emerged recently that Rodrigo was in advanced talks to join Qatari outfit Al Rayyan (28 June), with a deal reportedly close.

European opportunity

The potential departure of Rodrigo would be a huge loss to Leeds United and the club’s fans after he stood up and made himself counted in a side that was short on confidence and lacked composure in front of goal last season.

The Spaniard’s energy, aggression and never-say-die attitude certainly endeared him to the Elland Road support throughout his three-year stint in West Yorkshire, and it will be a sad sight to see him go.

The former Valencia forward scored 13 of his side’s 48 goals in the Premier League on his way to being named the club’s Player of the Season, paying back some of the £27m they shelled out for him two summers ago.

And it would be certainly a surprise to see him choose a route to Qatar given he still has all the tools to play at the top level elsewhere.

A return to his hometown would be excellent for him, especially at Atletico Madrid and the veteran striker could enjoy one last hurrah in the Champions League should he take up the offer.
