Leeds United transfer news as Phil Hay reacts to interest in Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer
Leeds United are joined by Sheffield United in the race to sign Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist claimed on Monday (21 August) that if the 21-year-old Englishman is to quit Villa Park this summer, it will be for a Premier League club.
The Whites are understood to be keen on signing a striker this summer as Rodrigo has left and Patrick Bamford is unavailable and has faced injury issues.
Hay said on the Square Ball at 31:46, “They like Cameron Archer but the vibe seems to be that if he leaves Aston Villa it will be for the Premier League and again Sheffield United seem very very keen on him.”
Fair enough
If players are getting moves to Premier League clubs where they’re guaranteed game time, there is little incentive to drop a division.
Archer hasn’t been a regular in the top flight so common knowledge would suggest a season in the Championship would do him wonders.
That very well may be the case but if he’s playing 25-30 Premier League games over 40+ in the second tier, he’ll certainly prefer the former.

The exposure of the top flight is something else altogether and even though he may not get the same numbers he will at Leeds, he’ll prefer that option.
The Blades will also have the additional Premier League revenue which will see them being able to pay more in terms of wages.
Archer isn’t someone Leeds are expected to break the bank for so they’ve got to play this one by ear and see if interest in him dwindles.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites need to table a ‘Convincing’ bid to sign a striker as EFL rivals’ stance emerges on his sale this summer.
