Leeds United transfer news as Newcastle track Tyler Adams with club at risk of firesale

Tyler Adams is a target for Newcastle with Leeds United at risk of a “relegation firesale”, according to a report from The Times.

After the Whites lost 6-1 at home to Liverpool on Monday night (17 April), eight days after a 5-1 reverse to Crystal Palace at Elland Road, the prospect of the drop is looming large.

Whichever clubs do go down are predicted to lose a host of young talents, with The Times suggesting all of Illan Meslier, Brenden Aaronson, Crysencio Summerville and Luis Sinisterra are “likely to attract interest”.

But, after chasing Jack Harrison for months through last summer and the start of the season before the star winger signed a new contract on 6 April the Magpies have apparently now got their eye on Adams.

The USMNT captain is currently injured, likely for the rest of the campaign, but Newcastle are reported to have “kept tabs” on him as the summer window approaches.

Inevitable

If Leeds United go down they can kiss goodbye to most of their top talents either way, and Adams’ reputation is growing considerably in his absence.

He drew plenty of plaudits earlier in the season, but as the side struggled under Jesse Marsch the excitement dissipated somewhat, especially as a number of goals were scored by players in too much space on the edge of the Whites box.

But since his he was ruled out with thigh surgery and, coupled with the absence of key defender Max Wober, chaos has returned to games and now complete disarray in the back half of the team.

Weston McKennie and Marc Roca looked like they could be the answer in the rousing win over Nottingham Forest on 4 April, but in the two defeats since they have been very poor.

If Newcastle have taken a liking to the American captain then it could be a concern even if Javi Gracia succeeds in rescuing the current situation and keeping the club in the top flight.

Adams’ overall form this season, in his first campaign in England, has been impressive enough that he was bound to generate interest, and the leaps that Eddie Howe’s side have made in their new financial era, potentially putting them into next season’s Champions League will make them an attractive prospect to many players.

In other Leeds United news, Gracia could now be gone before the end of the season after what has happened at Elland Road.
