Leeds United transfer news as Illan Meslier due for Thorp Arch return

Illan Meslier will reportedly be returning to Thorp Arch on Monday, 17 July, to join his Leeds United teammates for pre-season training.

According to Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth on 14 July, while he is expected back, there are still no guarantees that he will stay at the club for next season.

The Frenchman became the second choice towards the back end of last season and despite the change between the sticks, Leeds failed to stay up.

Good price?

After Meslier’s disastrous end to the season, he went from being one of the biggest assets at Leeds to a liability.

Had he been sold last summer, with Leeds in the Premier League and the Frenchman’s stock at an all-time high, he may even have made the argument for being the club’s record sale.

However, it seems like very few clubs will be willing to take the punt on someone who’s lost his way and whose career is heading in the opposite direction.

He’s still young, very young for a keeper, so there still is an argument to be made that clubs can invest in the potential he’s shown – which is not going away so soon.

So, if Leeds are getting a good fee for his sale this summer, then by all means, they should be looking to cash in on him.

They can do with a more experienced keeper, especially in the Championship and then once they’re in the Premier League, can assess their options.

In other Leeds United news, the club have been handed a boost to sign a Manchester United player this summer with Erik ten Hag likely to sanction his exit.
