Leeds United transfer news as Illan Meslier a ‘possibility’ for Inter Milan

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been identified as a transfer possibility for Serie A giants Inter Milan, according to Marco Barzaghi.

The Sport Mediaset journalist reported on his YouTube Channel (1 December) that the Frenchman is one of a number of possibilities as Inter look to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks, having shown “great promise” during his time at Elland Road.

Meslier is not the only goalkeeper being targeted by Simone Inzaghi’s side, with Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret also being offered to Inter ahead of his contract expiring with the Italian club at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

The 23-year-old has been an ever-present throughout the Championship campaign this season and managed to keep six clean sheets in 18 matches, with his current deal at Elland Road expiring in the summer of 2026.

Would take a big fee

Leeds United have been defensively solid for large portions of this season and a lot of that has stemmed from the performances of their number one between the posts at Elland Road, so the Whites won’t want to lose Melsier this summer if they can avoid it.

During his time in the Premier League, the Frenchman was guilty of making some big mistakes that cost the Whites some important points, culminating in him being dropped by Sam Allardyce as Leeds were eventually relegated from the top flight.

But he seems to have improved since returning to the Championship and has pulled off some impressive saves at some important moments of the Whites’ campaign. There are few doubts that Meslier would likely remain the Leeds number one if they return to the Premier League this season.

Karl Darlow is waiting in the wings should the Italian giants make a swoop for Meslier either in January or the summer and the Englishman showed during his time with Hull City last year that he is more than capable of performing in the Championship.

But you would imagine that Leeds will be reluctant to sell their number one unless the fee offered by Inter is huge.
