Leeds United transfer news as Grimaldo wanted at Elland Road, he wants Champions League

Leeds United are expressing an interest in signing Benfica left-back Grimaldo but the player wants to head to a project that is playing in the UEFA Champions League, according to Record pg 8. (18 February)

The report claims that Grimaldo has also been “probed” by Barcelona, however, the left-back wants to join a club where he will be a guaranteed starter.

Rui Costa hasn’t given up hope on handing the picky Grimaldo a new and improved Benfica contract and will meet with the player’s agent soon.

“Leeds United expressed interest in the signing of Grimaldo, confirmed by Record,” as quoted by Record pg 8. (18 February)

“However, according to our newspaper, the Benfica left-back is not interested in heading to the English club. If he leaves the Reds, the defender intends to head to a project that will lead him to participate in European competitions and in particular, in the Champions League.

“At the end of his contract with the Eagles, the 27-year-old Spaniard was also probed by Barcelona, but here another factor appears to push him away. Grimaldo wants to go to a club where he starts as a starter.

“Rui Costa has not yet given up on renewing with Grimaldo and will meet Ryan Harper, the player’s agent soon.”

And it’s gone.

Well that transfer saga was short and sweet, wasn’t it? Grimaldo doesn’t seem too keen on a move to West Yorkshire by the sounds of things and who can blame him?

Staying in the Sunny, warm climate of Portugal or Spain, or moving to the wet and soggy grey skies in England, Grimaldo evidently wants more than just Champions League football.

Nevertheless, the Whites do still need to push on in their search for a new left-back at the club, seeing as Max Wober has slotted into the centre-back position.

Aiming high for talents like Grimaldo is exactly what the club’s hierarchy needs to be doing even if players aren’t interested in moves initially.

Right now, there is little to tempt said talents to the club, with no permanent manager in place and Premier League survival far from secured.

But the Elland Road faithful will be hoping that these “small” issues will be ironed out before the summer transfer window opens.
