Leeds United transfer news as days spent arranging Joe Gelhardt loan exit
The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has reported that Leeds United have spent the last few days arranging Joe Gelhardt’s loan exit due to the amount of firepower Jesse Marsch now has up top.
Hay reported on 20 January that Gelhardt was nearing a Leeds United exit with his former club Wigan the most likely to capture his services.
Now, Hay has confessed that due to the “arsenal” Marsch has at his fingertips, the club have been more than willing to let Gelhardt leave for Wigan on loan.
“Jesse Marsch spoke last week about building an “arsenal” at Leeds United and as the January window enters its final 11 days, he has it at his fingertips,” said Hay as quoted by The Athletic. (21 January)
“Another striker on board, a transfer record broken and so much choice up front that Leeds spent the past few days arranging for Joe Gelhardt to go on loan back to Wigan Athletic.”
Defence next, please.
Leeds United are looking fairly fearsome in the attacking department, especially after recent displays and if they can find a way to sure up their defence, they will be a half-decent side.
The defence of the squad has to be the next priority to sort out and the club took one step towards doing that by signing RB Salzburg’s Max Wober.
But Wober isn’t the answer to solve this problem and more quality in the defensive areas of the pitch are needed for Leeds United to stay in the Premier League.
The Whites have conceded 1.7 goals per game under Marsch, a statistic the American won’t want to see but one he must sort out.
With the left-back conundrum now sorted out, the central defence needs to be the point of call addressed, a position in which Leeds have an abundance of talents, none of which fills fans with much hope.
If Marsch clings onto his job into the summer, then the Whites must sort out their defensive frailties, by doing so, they will have a much more comfortable time in the Premier League.
